With the sequel to 2023’s uMgaranto EP, Gugulethu-repping duo K.Keed and Orish reprise their roles as leading proponents of kasi rap. Reflecting their Xhosa heritage and township upbringing, Keed and Orish wrap wit, hustle, and a touch of bravado into a shared approach to story, communicating through punchline-filled lyricism and fluidly traded flows. uMgaranto II kicks off with “Abenam,” a lighthearted account of seeking guidance about the consequences of cheeky decisions. Conversely, synth-laden “Icebo Elithile” boasts slick bars challenging strife and societal expectations with aplomb. “Ngangelizwe,” meanwhile, is a brief but punchy statement of ambition, sharing its commanding stance with the trap-leaning hustler’s anthem “Tuku Tuku.” The pair shares chemistry with collaborators Zmowa, HENNYBELIT, Machasa, Creed oasis, APRIL YUNG, Mido rsa, and Barblee, each of whom helps to invigorate a distinctly cultural affair.
