Dinosaur Jr.’s long solidified amalgam of slacker rock, guitar heroism, and pop savvy is singular enough that the phrase “a Dinosaur Jr. record” is pretty descriptive on its own. But six albums into their second life, the reliably loose-limbed There Near shows how they’ve managed to keep it fresh since their initial ‘80s-’90s run. The chugging “No Friends” only reveals its existential anxiety on close listen, with J Mascis’ squealing solos washing away any worry. “Take Me With You,” one of two cuts to have keyboard contributions from fellow New Englander Ken Mauri, is a peppy rave-up full of longing and Mascis’ stretched-out vowel sounds. Lou Barlow takes the mic for the woozy “Blowin’ Up” and the grooving closer “No One’s Ready.” The trio’s years of playing together has made Dinosaur Jr. a tight band, but There Near shows that they know exactly when to get elastic.
