In the spring of 2026, songwriter Brennan Wedl went on tour opening for Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman. For her self-titled album, she recruited the former, alongside Brad Cook, to co-produce. In terms of indie-rock bona fides, it’s hard to get much better than that. But Wedl isn’t overshadowed by her recording partners (Lindsey Jordan of Snail Mail also joins in on the fun) on Brennan Wedl. Yes, the alt-country style that Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield has helped reinvigorate makes its way onto the album, but the Nashville-based songwriter brings her own story to the table. On “I Know How This Goes,” rollicking guitars collide with hi-hat splashes while Wedl shifts her voice to a lower register, the harmonies during the prechorus shimmering like the skyline on a summer night in her home city. She shows off her arrangement skills on “Airplane Movies,” which establishes a jam-band groove while staying attuned to the vision Wedl lays out on the project.
