

A much-loved Bay Area emcee/entrepreneur, Mac Dre was kind of like an underground Tupac: he paid tons of dues, did time behind bars, and recorded prolifically. Then he was murdered at the height of his fame and became an inspiration to an entire generation of fans and fellow artists alike. He put out a dozen records before his 2004 death, launched his own label Thizz Entertainment (which sparked the short-lived Hyphy movement), and worked extensively with cats like Keak Da Sneak, Mac Mall, Andre Nickatina, and Mistah F.A.B. While incarcerated at Lompoc in 1996, he released The Rompalation, and this sequel followed three years later. Slap-heavy Bay beats dominate, while the lineup of featured acts includes 14K, San Quinn, The Looie Crew, Dubee, Filthy Phil, Reek Daddy, PSD, Dubee, Saucy Chick, and many more. Though a few tracks sound a bit dated, most still impress. Check out "Romp Representatives," "Crestside Throw," and "Don't Waste My Time."
