The Speedy Ortiz leader opts for the mixtape format on a brief solo release. On Sadie Dupuis’ 2026 solo collection, 1331, she tries to free herself from the traditional strictures of the album concept. It serves as a spiritual reset for her practice as an artist outside of the band she leads, recording this brief, inventive mixtape by herself, in addition to performing all the instruments on her own. The result is homespun but never shabby. “Art Institute,” which pays homage to her adopted hometown of Philadelphia, is a glimmering pop cut built around a deceptively melodic sturdy bassline and a hook that sounds pulled from the writing rooms of superstars. “People’s Loser” is a sardonic and scrappy pop-punk flash-bang—a minute of pure energy before it dissolves into dust. The longest song here clocks in at a minute and a half, though brevity doesn’t suggest a lack of ideas. Rather, Dupuis is restrained in her songwriting yet untethered in her creative practice—a refreshing mix. Our Favorite Lyric: “Pretty little lifers making movies/Eating dog treats/At war with the drum of their thumbs” (“Pretty Little Lifers”).
