The South London MC raises the stakes on his boundary-pushing debut. South London MC PS Hitsquad may only yet be 24, but Life on License affirms him as already having outgrown the lane early fans tried to put him in. He’s been deliberate about calling his sound “post-drill,” a classification he leans into across his first official album, a follow-up to 2024’s Prodigal Son. Grime, rock, and electro all surface across Life on License, the dissonance of each playing out in service of the story rather than novelty. “I got bigger dreams/They keep telling me to rap, but I need bigger streams,” he confesses on “Talk Is Cheap.” The features on Life on License serve to sharpen the project’s range. Rising Brixton MC Cristale elevates “Popeye,” East London’s Unknown T shows out on the stunt-heavy “100 Man,” and Uganda’s Joshua Baraka is a wildcard highlight of “Glorified Gangster,” a reggae-inflected day-in-the-life cut. “8am/3am” pivots in another direction entirely, featuring a mid-song beat switch that makes the back half feel like something closer to a horror film. PS Hitsquad drops us off with the Lihtz collaboration “Free Your Mind,” a song whose title works as both a mantra for the ambitious young spitter and quick advice for any anyone who’d think to box his artistic practice in.
