As the prophecy foretold earlier in 2026: “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music.” Mykki Blanco had been moving in that direction anyway: On 2023’s Postcards From Italia EP, the rapper, poet, and New York bon vivant embraced classic rock alongside R&B and ’90s Eurodance. But on CAFE PARADISO, Blanco and longtime collaborator Drew “FaltyDL” Lustman pull from decades of dance-punk, art-pop, and underground club music history to arrive at a sound that’s timelessly cool—a record, in Blanco’s words, “for cosmopolitan aesthetes to sit alone in a cafe and work on crafting the life of their dreams.” The Velvet Underground and Silver Apples are here in spirit, as are Saint Etienne, Japanese city pop, and 20th-century bohemian literature (think Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin in Paris). Blanco channels the Talking Heads on “FOXES,” a nursery rhyme with Tama Gucci about a surrealistic fox hunt; on “Wasted in Soho,” he’s drunkenly people-watching from a sidewalk cafe in Lower Manhattan, wondering when all the yuppies showed up: “She just wants a latte/I just want a beer/Look at all the rich girls/How’d they all get here?” The streetlights flicker, the night fades to dawn, and rock ’n’ roll lives another day.
