On their third album, Hunnu rock progenitors The Hu continue to expand on their highly successful merging of throat singing, traditional Mongolian instrumentation, and rock music. Opener “Warrior Chant” sets the tone with bandleader Gala’s horsehead fiddle and resonant throat singing as bandmates Jaya, Enkush, and Temka layer in Mongolian jaw harp, ancient lute, and their own distinct vocal styles. “The Real You” takes on a more Western rhythmic form, but with a Far East honky-tonk vibe. Like The Hu’s previous work, the lyrics on Hun are almost entirely in the band’s native Mongolian. The exception is “Lost Soul,” which features guest vocals from Nothing More frontman Jonny Hawkins and follows The Hu’s previous Western collaborations with System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, Alice in Chains’ William DuVall, and Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale.
