Opener “Never Like the First Time” wastes no time establishing the stakes; his voice, here singing about the indignity of life itself, arrives with a weight that belies his 24 years. “Coasting” shifts the mood entirely, Hutch employing a looser, more celebratory approach, replete with some nimble raps. “Hard Healing,” too, carries an energy of victory. “Sorry” brings about another mood shift, reflecting on “looking for love in the wrong places,” and apologizing—repeatedly—for an untold number of missteps. Where so many singer-songwriter debuts tend to play out as showcases for range, On the Edge of the Earth succeeds through restraint. It’s a short journey, but a revealing one.
