Friends of Jesse Malin - I Would Do It For You Vol. 1

In 2023, Jesse Malin suffered an extremely rare spinal stroke, which left him partially paralyzed—a world-shattering shock for anyone, let alone a musician who’d spent the last five decades standing in front of a microphone. The fixture in the rock scene of New York’s East Village—and a friend, collaborator, tour mate, and occasional producer of Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, and many more—cut his teeth as a preteen hardcore kid in New York City before fronting punk outfit D Generation and, later, building a devoted following as a folk-rock singer-songwriter. After disaster struck and his stroke took him off the stage, several of his friends gathered to record 2024’s Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin, an album that offered up covers of Malin’s songs by Elvis Costello, Counting Crows, Spoon, Frank Turner, and others, as well as cuts from Springsteen, Williams, and Armstrong. The goal was to raise money for mounting medical bills as Malin continues to heal. Friends of Jesse Malin: I’d Do It for You, Vol. 1 continues that mission: Once again, Malin’s community has shown up to not only share in his music, but help him carry the weight of his recovery. This collection of Malin’s music—spanning his solo career, but also his work with D Generation—features contributions from Valley Lodge (who shine on the catchy “Too Loose”), Gogol Bordello (“Here’s the Situation”), Bebe Buell (“Dance With the System”), and more.
