Shinedown’s weighty 2003 debut pulses with grunge angst and chunky hard rock riffs, taking cues from the ‘90s rock heyday and charging them with a ‘00s radio-friendly approach. The Florida band is plenty dynamic too, channeling Alice In Chains by matching moody, atmospheric verses with rousing stadium-ready choruses on “Burning Bright” and “All I Ever Wanted." Through it all, Brent Smith’s gravelly voice captures the pensive moments, but it also hammers home those notes that head straight for the rafters. He's at his most powerful on the dramatic closer, “45.”
