Room to Grow

Back in the early '70s, when the only Anglophilia pop on the airwaves was little Jimmy Osmond affecting a Cockney accent on the corny “Long Haired Lover from Liverpool,” Barnaby Bye from New York's Long Island was a breath of fresh air. Joining forces with Blues Magoos guitarist Emil “Peppy” Thielhelm and drummer Michael Ricciardella from the psychedelic band The Illusion, twin brothers Bobby and Billy Alessi (from the cast of the musical Hair) were able to emulate their favorite British rock and pop acts while hammering down their own sound, as evidenced on this 1973 debut album, Room to Grow. “The Day Came On” opens with a skip-along whimsy sounding like Queen and ELO trying to write a new Beatles tune, with a Moog keyboard providing catchy leads. The sentimental serenade “I Feel for You” and the lilting “Laneya” boasted balladry trimmed with sibling close harmonies, while the harder-rocking “Marsha Mamaillia” could easily be mistaken for a lost gem by The Move. “Jessie Girl” sounds like classic britpop without the danger of any affected accents turning a good tune into novelty.
