Joined by bassist Ed Schuller and drummer Ernst Bier, From A to Z marks something of a return to clarinetist Perry Robinson’s '60s roots as put forth on records like Henry Grimes’ The Call. Robinson is known as a stylistic traveler, cutting sessions of ethno-jazz fusion and even a date with folk-raga guitarist Peter Walker. Aside from a curious version of “Joe Hill,” composed by the leader’s father Earl Robinson, all the tunes here are by members of the trio and offer a spry free-bop sensibility, as well as a warm, appealing jauntiness. With bass and drums gently prodding, Robinson’s vocal whirligigs retain a bubbly logic throughout. The pieces are mostly short and range from the country ramble of “Loose Nuts” to free-time tonal explorations. His work in klezmer is represented by “Funky Giora”: a Middle Eastern dance anchored by Schuller’s rubbery pizzicato and a dryly expanded skiffle. Engaging serious improvisation with a jovial lightness makes this album a perfect introduction to Robinson’s work.
