Balancing floaty vocals and funky undercurrents, hanbee’s second album evokes the cozy bliss of Japanese city pop. daydream radio even derives its name from the idea of a breezy, idyllic world that one can nurture in their mind. Crafted between Auckland and Seoul with producer Hyunmin Lee, these songs find hanbee—whom Apple Music named an Up Next artist in 2024—singing sweetly about the bonding effect of cute pet names (“tomato baby”) as well as deeper romantic devotion (“call me yours,” “stay by my side”). Yet despite how chill these songs might sound on the outside, there’s a melancholy component to many of them. Opener “city time” sees hanbee describe feeling lonely and out of place in the city, though still wanting to hear what someone else loves about it. Elsewhere, she asks the object of her affection not to make her cry and laments forgetting every one of her dreams. But given how winsome these songs are—with hanbee often delivering her light-stepping vocal turns at a gauzy remove—such fleeting twinges of sadness soon give way to something closer to contentment.
