“You don’t believe in the devil/But the devil believes in you!” So screams Aaron Bruno on “VANILLA LATTE,” one of the many short, sharp bangers on The Barbarians of California’s second album. In fusing ’80s SoCal hardcore attitude to ’90s metal and Bruno’s many vocal-style variations, tunes like “BACK TO THE VALLEY,” “BOMB TO A KNIFE FIGHT,” and “EARTHQUAKE” hammer and chug with a sense of humor but without overstaying their welcome: There’s only one song on the album more than three minutes long. “REALLY REALLY RAD” churns like hardcore-era Beastie Boys with an airy prechorus before turning into an EDM track. “SHARK OUT OF WATER” offers a mellow, melodic interlude, while “THIS IS SHREDICAL” revels in Cali-isms, outer-space melodies, and bouncy dance rhythms.
