Not content to be another interchangeable round in metalcore’s ever-lengthening bandolier, Liverpool’s Loathe take their eclectic sound in at least a dozen different directions on A Stranger to You. The UK squad have been shapeshifters from the start, but their fourth album is their most maximalist realization to date. Shoegaze meets industrial on “Block of Flats” while propulsive rock fuses to rubbery basslines on “Fortress Down” and “Harder to Pretend”. Godflesh grind meets pounding nu-metal on “Revenant” as the band teams up with production/artist duo NOWHERE2RUN. Massive synth waves meet R&B on “Fangs” as vocalist Kadeem France shows off his chameleonic range and attention to nuance. “The Ladder” is the album’s soft indie ballad, with an assist from producer/singer Jordan Rakei. Our Favorite Track: “Gifted Every Strength” captures almost every style used on the album in one eight-minute journey.
