The pan-Africanist ideal never died—it morphed into hybridized sonic fragments that connect Joburg to Nairobi via Lagos and Accra. One of our favorite torchbearers of the continent’s far-reaching musical ingenuity is Obi’s House founder, DJ OBI. For his Africa Now mix, the Nigerian DJ’s selections include tracks from some of his country’s biggest stars, such as Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, Asake, and Wizkid. “Many are very popular names, some of which I’m grateful to say are good friends of mine,” he says. “Most importantly, they bring about good memories, good vibes.” And good vibes is what this mix is all about. “This is a travel-time mix,” says OBI. “I do a great deal of traveling, so I’m always in need of a good playlist, where I can just press play for non-stop vibes. African music continues to evolve by creating different subgenres that certify its place within the world’s music space. We are getting a lot of Afro-house and deep house, and a lot of the R&B influences as well. It’s a great way for African music to be represented to the rest of the world. When you listen to this mix, I want it to celebrate everything about African culture. Press play, close your eyes, and envision a great summer vibe—in your favorite African destination, being played by your favorite African DJ, DJ OBI.” Listen to DJ OBI’s vision of Africa Now and check back for more one-of-a-kind mixes.
