Dancing and Crying: Vol. 3

Dancing and Crying: Vol. 3

The dance-pop queen closes out her EP trilogy in celebratory style. As a former folk singer who eventually found global success as a dance-pop singer, Calgary’s Kiesza has staked out her natural habitat at the intersection of big emotions and big beats. And with her Dancing and Crying EP series, she’s reclaimed her place as the most dramatic girl in the club after a prolonged period of recovery, soul-searching, and musical wanderlust that followed a severe 2017 car accident. This third installment gives the therapeutic project a suitably celebratory send-off with seven irrepressible tracks that showcase Kiesza’s love of classic ’90s-house vibes and her fluid theatricality, as she effortlessly slips between the I-will-survive discotheque baptism of “When I’m Dancing,” the hyperpop futurism of “With You,” and the trip-hoppy alt-rock edginess of “Like a God.” But while the Dancing and Crying trilogy may be coming to a close, the ecstatic cowbell-clanging closer “After Party”—wherein Kiesza’s vocals are limited to wordless wails—feels less like a farewell than a promise to keep on ravin’ on.
