Though rapper Ashton Francis has been kicking around the Scarborough scene since the mid-2010s (when he was known as Ashton Martin), OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR is actually his first full-length album. And clearly, he’s been waiting a lifetime for this moment, as he fills nearly every available second with his Pusha T-level bravado. The production is spare, with often just a warped soul sample or Wu-Tang-esque loop floating below the bars, as the MC lays out his self-edifying origin story (“THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP”), shares dispatches from the frontlines of fatherhood (“TRUTH HURTS”), and raises his fist for Palestine (“For Tha Culture”) with equal vim and vigor.
