Amsterdam singer-songwriter Willem Smit expresses his bemused outlook on the world through oddball songs that revel in the unexpected. Take “Scrambled Egg,” which takes a sharp turn from shuffling slacker-pop into classical bliss two and a half minutes in, or “Moping,” which pairs a tightened-up beat and grooving backup singers with Smit sighing about how he’s forced to be “professionally moping around.” Smit’s third album as Personal Trainer runs toward different corners of the musical map with glee. The title track “Human Assholes” meanders with purpose, with laconic saxophones and hypnotic central riff culminating in the brief, spaced-out interlude “Rim Shot/Event Horizon,” while “Object Permanence” adds a recorder ensemble to its loud-quiet-loud indie rock before veering into a darker realm.
