Amongst artists on MIKE’s influential 10K imprint, duendita holds a special spot. The songwriter from Queens isn’t a verbose MC like many of their labelmates, but they do embody the diaristic, introspective, and contemplative spirit that unites many of the artists on New York’s most exciting indie-rap roster. duendita lives mostly between experimental pop, soul, and R&B, treating their self-produced landscapes as a sounding board, an interactive mood ring, or journal. The songs are unflinchingly honest, like on “super sad!,” in which duendita laments that they’re in the club, looking for their friends, and are, simply put, super sad. Though “beach” clocks in at under a minute and a half, duendita fits a bevy of ideas into the dance-leaning track, with wobbling synths and footwork-inspired percussion giving the song a jolt. Most of the songs here are under two minutes, which is seemingly all the time duendita needs to paint an entire world.
