In the four years since their 2022 debut, SongBook, The Lazy Eyes have grown no less enamored of 1960s psych-pop. In both the sighing vocal harmonies and jaunty arrangements, you’ll hear shades of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and The Zombies alike on Cheesy Love Songs. Luckily, that approach provides cozy scaffolding for the Sydney quartet’s heartfelt—and, yes, undeniably romantic—songwriting. Penned while singer/guitarist Harvey Geraghty was learning jazz piano in high school, “The One Who Got Away” feels classic in the best sense, complete with a dramatic middle eight. Even tunes about wrestling with depression (“Every Day I Lay in Bed”) and puncturing romantic fantasies (“I Just Don’t Know You Yet”) are surprisingly bright in mood. Also featuring singer/guitarist Itay Shachar, drummer Noah Martin, and bassist Leon Karagic, The Lazy Eyes sneak plenty of loving touches into their second album. The opening instrumental “Ballerina” centers on a melody played on a custom-made music box, while other songs showcase vintage gear like organ and electric piano. And if “Mr Histograph” sounds somewhat familiar, that’s because it sprang to life from the four players listening to their earlier single “Imaginary Girl” backwards.
