Detached From The Rest Of You

The London-based electronic musician leans into her confidence crisis rather than trying to transcend it. In the aftermath of her fifth album, 2023’s Gentle Confrontation—a heartfelt journey through IDM, glitch, and folktronica that critics called her best effort yet—Loraine James found herself overthinking and struggling with self-doubt. Approaching that album’s follow-up, the London-based electronic musician leaned into her confidence crisis rather than trying to transcend it. Departing from the club-driven sounds of its predecessors (and the ambient atmospherics of her Whatever the Weather side project), Detached from the Rest of You wallows in stripped-down sounds and uncertain moods. Over sparse soundscapes of clicks, glitches, and subtle synth washes, James grapples openly with shyness, insecurity, and creative dead ends: “Constantly comparing myself to others/There’s no other/But you know how it goes,” she sings on “The Book of Self Doubt.” Yet her own voice is more present than it’s ever been, with succinct but candid vocals unobscured by their surroundings as James steadily writes her way out of a rut. Guests include Tirzah, Low’s Alan Sparhawk, and Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto.
