With his high-octane house sets and club tracks laced with propulsive basslines, Chris Lorenzo has fuelled dance floors since his rise from the UK’s house and bass scene in the early 2010s. In late 2028, the Birmingham native paid his first visit to Shanghai to play the city’s edition of Belgium’s iconic Tomorrowland EDM festival. Invited by Apple Music to create a live mix for the Lunar New Year, Lorenzo focused on capturing the atmosphere he generates in the club. “For this one I wasn’t trying to overthink it or make it clever,” he says. “The vibe was about momentum and pressure. Just energy, groove and that raw feeling you only get in a live set.” Lorenzo favours feel and impact in his set creation. “I don’t care who made it or how big it is—if it works, it works,” he says. “The main thing is vibe and energy.” That same philosophy guides his prolific production work as well. “Whether it took me five minutes or five months to write, the two questions are ‘Do I love it?’ and ‘Did it make the crowd move when I road-tested it?’ If it’s not a yes to both, then I have to go back and rework it until it does the job,” he says. For this house DJ, flexibility is key: “I’ll have ideas going in, but if the crowd pulls me somewhere else, I’m following them.
