Before Artistry - EP

A Boogie wit da Hoodie tends to follow a certain formula for his album rollouts. Prior to his chart-topping Hoodie SZN, the Bronx-raised melodic rap star strategically dropped an EP called B4 HOODIESZN to feed the streets and maintain momentum. He’s since used that move on a few occasions, perpetuating this tradition with the release of Before Artistry. The six-track outing leans heavily on his proven stylistic strengths, coating his homegrown New York hip-hop sensibilities with a smooth veneer of R&B sheen. Anchored by a clever hook interpolation, opener “Glitchin” embodies this approach quite effectively, shutting down all manner of fakes and snakes in a deceptively untroubled fashion. He nimbly pivots from the hedonistic impulses of “PGD” with Kyle Richh and ZEDDY WILL to the considerably more personal ballad “Get Away.” Assuredly teasing what’s to come with his subsequent full-length, he tags Trippie Redd for the moody closer “Red Light.”
