Leonel Garcia and Noel Schajris made a name for themselves in the early 2000s as Sin Bandera, garnering chart successes and industry accolades for their timely brand of Latin pop stylings. Since reuniting in 2015, the Mexico City duo have shared new music as they see fit, including 2016’s EP-length homecoming Una Última Vez. A decade later, they maintain their reputation for smooth and sentimental songcraft with the mature and meaningful ESCENAS. From the opening “Estaré Aquí,” an ardent expression of paternal love for a child who’s reached adulthood, the themes they share match the concerns and interests of their grown-up audience. The soaring single “¿Qué Culpa Tiene Ella?” contends with the perilous complexities of a longtime love now marked by absence, while “Nunca” captures the devastation that betrayal does to the betrayed. Predictably, the ballads here carry substantial emotional weight, not the least of which being the arms-wide-open declaration of fatherly devotion on “Nació Una Vida.”
