Argentine pop star Maria Becerra seems downright inescapable in Latin music these days, and with good reason. In recent years, her talents have extended to hit singles and fan-favorite tracks with everyone from J Balvin and Enrique Iglesias to Fuerza Regida and Los Ángeles Azules. Befitting the mythological qualities of her album’s namesake, the multifaceted QUIMERA divides itself into five distinct movements, each bearing different albeit related musical characteristics that add up to her complete artistry. Working closely here with producer XROSS, with whom she previously teamed up for 2022’s LA NENA DE ARGENTINA, she touches on a variety of genres including cumbia, dancehall, reggaetón, and R&B, with occasional guests by her side. She reunites with her “Miénteme” partner TINI for the Afrobeats-infused “HASTA QUE ME ENAMORO” and gets with El Alfa for the splendid dembow cut “HACE CALOR.” For someone so well-known as a collaborator, she arguably sounds best when the spotlight shines solely on her, evident amid the powerful balladry of “INFINITOS COMO EL MAR” and “RECUERDO QUE NUNCA EXISTIÓ.”
