The members of Texas quartet 2BYG—To Be Young and Gifted—wear their influences proudly. “Wassup” revamps B2K’s 2001 smash hit “Uh Huh,” a conspicuous hat tip to their stylistic forefathers. But 2BYG’s debut album takes inspiration from more places than just a group they’ve dressed up as for Halloween. Lead single “Karma” projects the manicured edge of early new jack swing, while the exponentially more sultry “Someone Like You” uses Scorpion-era Drake synth riffs to help the group chronicle the pains of love in the age of social media. “Twin” has remnants of Missy and Timbaland’s Swing Mob sound, and album closer “Do 4 Luv” is an ethereal remake of the Bobby Caldwell standard. Together, it plays as equal parts reverence and reinvention, a project the group is betting plays greater than the sum of its many, long adored parts.
