HOTLIFE

HOTLIFE

“I am what I am/And I like what I like,” Tiga repeatedly declares on his first album since 2016, as if to reassure his patient fans that the decade-long break between records has had no dramatic altering effect on his musical vision. On HOTLIFE, he gets right back to blog-house business as if he had just stepped away from the dance floor for a brief bathroom break. HOTLIFE also shows that his interim immersion into marital bliss and fatherhood has only emboldened his subversive spirit, as he invests the ’80s-rap throwback “HIGH ROLLERS,” the playfully sleazy Fcukers collab “SILK SCARF,” and the freaky, funhouse-mirrored Moroderisms of “FRICTION” with scenery-chewing flamboyance. And of course, it wouldn’t be a Tiga record without a cool clubby makeover of a Top 40 classic—in this case, it’s a version of INXS’s “Need You Tonight” that transmutes the original’s sweaty funk into frost-covered electro. But on the album’s triumphant closer, “ECSTASY SURROUNDS ME,” Tiga embraces a different strain of ’80s pop—the synth romanticism of New Order—and keeps his signature sarcasm in check to deliver an openhearted rave anthem.
