At 41, Nyashinski has a lifetime of experiences to draw from. As a member of the pioneering Nairobi group Kleptomaniax, he helped to define an era of East African hip-hop before going on hiatus following a move to the United States. The Kisii-born star announced his return in 2017 with “Malaika,” a bluesy ballad that introduced an affinity for melody (to go along with the razor-sharp bars he’d built his reputation on). This all set the stage for Lucky You, a genre-blurring solo debut album that showcased roots reggae and neo-soul influences in a hip-hop framework. And on sophomore album, Yariasu, he’s celebrating his continued evolution. Across it, Nyashinski is reveling in his legacy and what he’s achieved during a storied career. “I’m grateful for it all, I celebrate life,” he sings atop a sanguine instrumental on “Legendary.” That sentiment distills what unfolds on the rest of the project. He’s thankful for both growth and success on “Grateful” and is in a celebratory mood on “Dubai.” He’s charmed by a lover’s physical qualities on “Elegance” and lays a groove for his ideal lady on “P.I.C. (Partner In Crime).” There are also stern reminders that he’s not to be messed with. “Fuck around, find out,” he warns on “Don’t Play With My Money (DPWMM).” Not long after, he flexes his lyrical proficiency on the acerbic “TAI CHI.” Those moments of consternation don’t linger, however, as he’s again urging us to take things easy and be present on “Celebrate Life,” and making a case for transparency between lovers on “Wine.” On the project’s closer, “Becoming,” Nyashinski leaves fans with a message of faith and perseverance, making sure to also take stock of his life’s many triumphs.
