With his Corridos Bélicos album series and countless collaborations with many of the genre’s leading lights, Luis R Conriquez became one of the most ubiquitous Mexican artists of the 2020s. With Meneo, however, he casts off música mexicana’s stylistic restrictions to try his hand at a variety of other forms. These forays into hip-hop, reggaetón, and more may strike some of his die-hard fans as odd. Still, as more and more of his peers push into sounds beyond the ones that brought them fame and fortune, the move seems worth the strategic risk, especially given the quality of these results. From the thumping Anuel AA collab “Relojito Cartier” to the far funkier “Beliwestcoast” with Esau Ortiz, he executes at such a high level that even his haters might have to concede. Notably, he dabbles in dembow on a few different occasions here, including with Dominican stars El Alfa and Chimbala on the title track and the like-minded Victor Mendivil on “Wanda.”
