Ironically for a producer famed as a pop mastermind, Mitch Miller made one of the most purely traditional Christmas albums of the ‘50s. He doesn’t touch any contemporary holiday material, instead keeping strictly to classic carols like “Joy to the World” and “The First Noel.” And rather than modernizing the songs with his signature pop production style, he created arrangements revolving around his majestic-sounding choir, with only the sparest accompaniment. The result is a deeply stirring Christmas music experience.
