With more than a dozen years of gigging and five previous albums to their credit, The Cookers sound as fierce as ever on their sixth, Look Out!. This septet of living masters hails from a generation that defined ’60s and ’70s jazz modernism in all its rhythmic drive, sonic intensity, soaring lyricism, and mysterious, evocative harmony. Getting these musicians the credit they deserve is part of the band’s mission, and a prime motivator for producer and trumpeter David Weiss, who like alto saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison is some years younger than the rest. The group’s chief composers remain pianist George Cables, tenor saxophonist Billy Harper, and bassist Cecil McBee, who supply the material here, digging in alongside trumpeter Eddie Henderson and drummer Billy Hart. Merging the tightness of a small group with the wide dynamics and expansive arrangements of a mini big band, The Cookers play with depth and versatility on a set that includes McBee’s hip modern blues line “Cat’s Out the Bag,” Harper’s loping “Somalia,” and Cables’ flowing “AKA Reggie” and “Traveling Lady.”
