Nothing More subverts all expectations of a metal album, twisting genre conventions into something ambitious, singular, and refreshing. The anxious pulse of lead track “Ocean Floor” gives way to the blistering “This Is the Time (Ballast),” which comes loaded with quick-fingered, guitar-hero crescendos and pounding drums that the rest of the album builds upon. But the Texan band also displays impressive diversity, from the understated, heart-on-sleeve “I’ll Be OK” to the absolutely monumental, slow-rising epic “God Went North.”
