Recorded with Fleet Foxes producer Phil Ek, the London band’s debut album strikes a beguiling balance of fragility and strength. Animal Kingdom owe the former quality to Richard Sauberlich's keening voice; the singer conveys several heartaches’ worth of hurt and yearning on both the dreamy “Home” and on “Chalk Stars,” the album’s spacey six-minute closer. Yet on the title track and the driving “Walls of Jericho,” more urgent rhythms and beefier guitars add a brawnier feel to the band’s Britpop and dream-pop inspirations.
