Ushered in by a much-loved—and borrowed—guitar riff, 1964’s Enta Omry (You Are My Life) became the crown jewel in Umm Kulthum’s momentous collection of studio recordings and live performances, gloriously pointing towards a fresh, outward-looking future for Egyptian music. It was her first in a series of collaborations with the great moderniser of Arabic music, composer-arranger Mohamed Abdel Wahab, who gifted Kulthum with some of the most cherished melodies of her long career. If the song raised eyebrows among the traditionalists, it quickly took a place of pride among Arab audiences.
