Born in Naarm (Melbourne) but raised in Aotearoa (New Zealand), Stan Walker pays tribute to his Māori culture on his sixth studio album, sung almost entirely in te reo Māori. Dedicated to his late grandmother and all the influential tupuna (grandmothers) like her, Te Arohanui showcases the singer’s ability to move fluidly across pop and R&B while drawing on deep wells of emotion and spirituality. Case in point: his guest-studded 2014 hit “Aotearoa,” all about his connection to what he calls “the land of God.” He also reworks such earlier tracks as “Tau Te Mārire / Take It Easy” and “Tena Rā Koe / Thank You” amidst new compositions. Walker flexes the vocal chops that saw him win Australian Idol in 2009, soaring to especially stunning heights on “Unuhia / I Surrender,” while the piano-and-strings ballad “Find You” provides a touching duet with Maisey Rika.
