True to the Avanzada Regia movement—born in the late ‘90s in their native Monterrey, Mexico—Kinky are fearlessly experimental. The electro-funk-rock quintet’s 2002 debut is nothing short of a delightfully schizophrenic jam session. The common thread: relentless rhythm. “Mas” is propelled by a monster bass, “Sol (Batucada)” whips up a carnival-esque samba groove, and “Cornman” playfully mashes together norteño accordion, a mambo piano line, conga drums, disco synths, and electric guitar. In between, there’s hardly an idle moment.
