R.D. Burman is arguably most strongly associated with his zesty classics from the 1960s and ’70s. One of his finest moments, however, arrived posthumously in the 1990s on the soundtrack of pre-Partition drama 1942 A Love Story, almost entirely made up of lilting ballads. No one captures the rush of first love (“Ek Ladki…”) or the world-stopping effect of a romantic rendezvous (“Kuchh Na Kaho”) with quite the same finesse as Burman and lyricist Javed Akhtar. Widely regarded as one of the best Bollywood OSTs of all time, it may be set in a specific period, but its songs are for the ages.
