K.R.I.T. stands for King Remembered in Time, and at the time of TDT’s release, the Mississippi monarch’s loyal subjects have had more than a decade to ruminate on his greatness. TDT comes several months after his Thrice X EP, a three-track release that broke the silence following his 2017 album, 4Eva Is a Mighty Long Time. Across eight songs—including the three from the EP—TDT remains true to the second-generation “country rap tunes” aesthetic K.R.I.T. has embodied since his breakthrough mixtape, 2010’s K.R.I.T. Wuz Here. “Learned From Texas” is the most overt example of this—an ode to Houston’s UGK and DJ Screw sonics, replete with talk of the slabs, swangers, and trunk-popping that traveled far outside of the state following its mid-aughts hip-hop hot streak. K.R.I.T. even adopts the motivational lilt of the legendary Pimp C for “Pick Yourself Up,” a song whose production includes a number of recognizable samples, not least of which is a pristine interpolation of the endlessly used Isley Brothers classic “Between the Sheets.” K.R.I.T. has long been one of the most formidable double threats in hip-hop—equally adept at rapping and production, creating the perfect backdrops for his mud-thick raps. On TDT, we’re reminded of this, and that his time in the game has only fortified his name’s prophecy.
