Even when chronicling the poignant or painful realities of border life, Fuerza de Tijuana play their corridos with adrenaline-pumping exuberance, having first honed their fearless storytelling in rowdy underground clubs. But while they remain explosive performers on Avanzando, the prolific quartet is also now exploring a decidedly more expansive sound. There are still plenty of swaggering crime-and-punishment epics ("Caro Lo Pague") and gripping sketches of day-to-day struggle ("El Caimán") throughout, but the band’s forays into exquisitely delicate balladry ("Bonita") and sensuously intimate cumbia ("Hazmelo Creer") are delightfully surprising.
