Those not familiar with pianist Marc Cary might find his mix of knotty acoustic post-bop and spaced-out electric stuff similar to Robert Glasper's music. But Cary's been working both sides of the fence since the ‘90s while also freshening up the sound up with elements of global folk music. After a recent solo tribute to his former boss, Abbey Lincoln, the pianist returns with a second studio effort that features his flexible Focus Trio. Of the acoustic numbers here, the insistent “Indigenous” will linger long after the song is over, as will the energetic “Outside My Window.” Yet it’s Cary's electric material that's the most original, as it strips the pedantry of electric jazz wankery down to something textural and hypnotic—“Toti Blues” features the insistent go-go beat native to Cary’s hometown of Washington, D.C., seamlessly fused to the long-form structure of Indian classical music. “Open Baby,” on the other hand, meditatively floats on a bed of soulful electric piano and ambient synthesizer with a subtle rhythmic underpinning. Inspiring on several levels, this inclusive vision has much to offer for those wondering about jazz’s present and future.
