Watch Dis!

When they skyrocketed into the spotlight in 2018 thanks to a well-timed Drake shoutout, the City Girls were instantly the hottest duo in hip-hop. But the story of Yung Miami and JT would prove to be far more complicated; while JT served a two-year prison sentence for credit card fraud, Miami held it down as the face of the duo as their career took off. Back then, it seemed unthinkable that the best friends who’d been inseparable since middle school would ever fall out. But in 2024, the City Girls officially disbanded after a swirl of rumours and subtle disses. Since then, Miami (born Caresha Brownlee) has settled comfortably into the role of talk show host/mogul through her interview series Caresha Please. But the Opa-locka, Florida, native whose bratty, chanted punchlines channelled Florida rap icons like Trina and Jacki-O was quietly working on her solo material, like “Spend Dat”, a runaway hit for the age of the scammer. (The New York Knicks turned up to it in the locker room after winning the 2026 NBA championship.) That song is the cornerstone of Miami’s debut solo album Watch Dis!, which includes a pair of remixes with verses from Lil Baby and Davido. The other tracks are a testament to Miami’s carefree charisma and reverence for the raw Southern rap of her youth, from the nods to classic Jeezy on “2008” to the brassy “Dade County”, an homage to Slip-N-Slide Records with verses from Trina, Trick Daddy and Rick Ross. But Miami saves the album’s emotional centrepiece for the end. Over a sample of Diana Ross’ “Missing You” on “Dear JT”, Miami sends a heartfelt message to her estranged best friend, tracing the wild highs and lows of the “modern-day Thelma and Louise”. “Before the City Girls, way before Caresha Please/It was you and me,” she raps, recalling the days when they were two friends trying to make ends meet. It’s a poignant coda to the City Girls’ story, and a new beginning for Miami.
