When you’ve had a career like the one Ricky Martin has, going from the heights of pop superstardom to an active legacy run supported across generations, your discography becomes covetable for cover-song potential. Yet rather than merely permit other artists to adapt his songs, the Puerto Rican singer instead takes a more collaborative approach with the inventive, EP-length ReVivo. Initially hinted at with a series of singles, collected here alongside some previously unheard takes, the endeavour keeps Martin at the centre of the works he originally created while allowing others to add their artistic inflections or aid in notable reinterpretations. A number of música mexicana stars appear here, including Christian Nodal and Grupo Frontera, bringing their stylistic signatures to “Fuego de Noche, Nieve de Día” and “Tu Recuerdo”, respectively. “Vuelve”, the title track from his 1998 album, gets fused with cumbia and contemporary pop qualities with the help of Los Ángeles Azules and TINI. He teams up with Brazil’s own Luan Santana for a Portuguese-language take on A Medio Vivir ballad “Te Extraño, Te Olvido, Te Amo”, renamed “Estranho”, and duets with Kany Garcia for a fresh version of “Asignatura Pendiente”.
