Watertown

Watertown

Brothers Osborne tap back into their roots on this fifth studio album, named in reference to the siblings’ small coastal home town of Deale, Maryland. Produced by Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Lainey Wilson), the album retains the rough-around-the-edges spirit of its 2023 self-titled predecessor, but this outing lets the duo comprising TJ Osborne and John Osborne reach for new levels of vulnerability as songwriters. “Family Business” is a solo write from John that playfully challenges traditional family values, with nods to colourful characters like “a daddy with a girlfriend who loves marijuana” and the winking warning “You mess with one and you’ll get the whole damn pack.” “Doors” is equal parts clever and tender, with vivid vignettes about the stages of life we glide in and out of and how the places we frequent often make us who we are. That tune, in particular, showcases John’s celebrated guitar chops, as he serves up a sticky solo at the bridge. “Watertown” ends the album on a reflective note, as TJ sings reverently about the “dot on the map” that raised him and his brother. Cody Johnson lends his rich baritone to the nostalgic opening track “Born and Raised Hell” and Stephen Wilson Jr. appears on “Tough Kid”, a ballad about the pain that often lies beneath hard exteriors.
