The Toronto R&B duo were thrust from obscurity into the spotlight when they produced and co-wrote 2013’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home”—a song that channelled Drake’s inner Phil Collins and instantly earned a place within the wedding dance-floor canon. Since then, the duo (vocalist Majid Al Maskati and producer Jordan Ullman) have held it down as OVO Sound’s resident retro-futurists with their blend of ’80s synth-pop and atmospheric R&B. On Two Roads, their fifth album, Majid Jordan maneuver through a hazy world of late nights and neon-lit lounges, relishing in infatuation or wallowing in heartache over beats that draw from ’80s soft rock, new jack swing, Teddy Riley and Quincy Jones. The vibe is sleek, glossy and just the right amount of cheesy until the closing track, “Two Roads”, a Simon & Garfunkel-esque folk ballad on which the creative partners celebrate their differences: “Two winding roads will never move the same/Even when they meet.”
