Jesus & Whiskey

Memphis-born multi-hyphenate K. Michelle’s seventh album is her first country full-length, drawing on the Judds and Lee Ann Womack records that helped raise her, as well as the songwriting talents she’s honed over the years. Michelle made a mark in R&B for her sharp-edged storytelling and willingness to write honestly about life’s messy moments, and those gifts are made for soundtracking hoedowns. Armed with a heavy drawl and heaps of dirty laundry, Michelle is out to prove, as she dryly notes on “Intro”, “the greatest comeback isn’t revenge, it’s growth.” True to the album’s title, she opens up about faith on songs like “Damn Good Friend”, a stormy piano ballad chronicling her journey toward the light, and croons odes to the bottle like the down-with-love barn burner “Jack Daniel’s”. She also flaunts the yodelling talents that got her a college scholarship on the galloping “Yodel”, one of this record’s many moments where K. Michelle shows how she still has more surprises to offer.
