On Real Boston Richey’s first LP since 2024’s Richey Rich, the rapper—who’s from Florida, not Massachusetts—emerges vengeful. On the piano-driven second S.O.S. cut, “Played First”, the Tallahassee vocalist cooks up his signature singsong delivery to run through all the romantic partners that enter and depart his life, seemingly more concerned with how many ladies he’s met in Orlando than finding that one true love. Real Boston Richey seems to enjoy the life of a player. On “Lose a Loser”, though, he cues up a classic trap beat to shift his focus to something more important: his standing in the hood. Richey’s clever storytelling and ability to build one-liners is on full display here, waxing comically over a dreary organ melody that gives the song an uncertain edge. The tension is resolved, though, when Boston Richey makes his role in the community abundantly clear: “I got that rank up in my hood just like Obama.” Our Favourite Beat: The haunted, solemn piano chords of “500 Followers”.
