Just before the world shut down in 2020, underground rap legend Denzel Curry and burgeoning superproducer Kenny Beats locked in for a whirlwind three-day studio session. The result was UNLOCKED, a full-length collaboration that traded the former Raider Klan rapper’s grimy South Florida stylings for an homage to the wild stylists of ’90s New York rap. Six years and a name change later (Kenny Beats now goes by his government name, Kenneth Blume), the duo reconnect for their second joint album—one whose recording process inspired fights as explosive as the resulting songs. The prevailing sound is chaotic, abstracted boom-bap—think MF Doom-on-steroids beats chock-full of chopped-up samples, with guest verses from kindred spirits JPEGMAFIA and Westside Gunn. Here, the Miami SoundCloud pioneer spits with more precision than ever, boasting comparisons to Ernest Hemingway and Mike Tyson and dropping nods to classics from Wu-Tang to Lil Wayne.
