An ambitious Latin-pop opus from the Puerto Rican star. When Jay Wheeler first emerged as a breakout artist, thanks in no small part to his collaborative hit “La Curiosidad” with Myke Towers and reggaetón pioneer DJ Nelson, there was no telling where his career might lead him. His evolution over the subsequent half-decade into a bona fide Latin-pop star became essentially undeniable, with 2024’s Música Buena Para Días Malos and its 2025 follow-up GIRASOLES crystallising his ascent. Even still, a release as ambitious with its sprawl as La Voz Favorita may come as a surprise even to his most devoted fans. With some two dozen tracks spanning about an hour and a half, this would-be opus from the popular Puerto Rican singer marks his longest album to date. Yet while some artists in his position might have cut corners to get to this cinematic runtime, Wheeler has kept things free of filler and focused on showcasing his current craft, with guests like Mora and Marcelo Rubio pushing him further. Rest assured, his R&B reggaetonero reputation remains very much intact, evident on cuts like “Blicky” and the irresistible smash “De Lejitos”. Yet he’s no longer dependent on dembow thump to drive his songs, with softer moments such as “Adiós” and the pleading “Ma” as authentic in feel as his more maximalist ones. He can be as explicit as any of the genre’s bad boys, made unambiguously clear on “Tu Peor Opción” and the sexy drill-coded “She Like 2 Fuck”, the latter with Luar La L, Remers and TORRRES. As much as he thrives in the relatively familiar, he brings that same energy, albeit with a lighter lyrical touch, to the standout salsa curveball “Rubio”.
